Papers of the Yancey family, 1899, 1904-1953.

The collection consist of papers relating to the Yancey family, B.F. Yancey, and the Esmont Colored School, Scottsville, Va., which he founded. These papers include letters, photographs, school records, clippings, greeting cards and invitations, memoranda books and financial and legal papers. There are also papers pertaining to the Improved Order Shepherds & Daughters of Bethlehem, the Sons of Esmont Lodge No. 7444 of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, and the New Hope Baptist Church, Esmont, Va. A scrapbook is filled with clippings pertaining to African-Americans. Major correspondents in the collection include B.F. Yancey; his wife Harriet Yancey; their children Roger Yancey a student at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute and the Christiansburg Normal and Industrial Institute and later a lawyer in Plainfield, N.J.; Benjamin Franklin Yancey, Jr., a student at the Virginia Technical School and College, Lynchburg; and May Yancey, a student at the Virginia Normal and Industrial Institute, Petersburg; and grandchildren william R. Eason, and Roger M. Yancey, Jr., in the 3703rd Training Squadron, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
